Cutting the Ties that Bind: The Importance of Cord-Cutting

Let’s talk about cord-cutting. What is it? Why is it important? And how does it work?

Learning to cord-cut is one of the first things I teach my reiki level one students. When I teach reiki, I take them a few layers deeper than a traditional reiki class to really help my students level up in the 5D. My main goal is to create empowered energy healers with a well-rounded approach to reiki, energy healing, protection, and alchemization. Therefore, understanding how to cut etheric cords from your energetic body is extremely important.

Imagine your energetic body as a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of experience, connections, and emotions. Some of these threads can be a beautiful, healthy exchange of energy that lifts you up and nourishes your spirit. However, there can be other threads that bind you to past trauma, unhealthy relationships, or even limiting beliefs. And it's through spiritual cord-cutting that we learn to sever these draining connections, creating space for healing, growth, and personal liberation.
Cord-cutting is a practice found in various spiritual and energetic traditions aimed at releasing unhealthy, energetic attachments. These "cords" are believed to be energetic links that form between individuals, situations, or even negative emotions. They can drain our vital energy, leaving us emotionally or spiritually depleted.

Think of it like this: When you have a heated argument with someone, an energetic cord might form, holding onto the anger and negativity long after the words are spoken. Or, clinging to a past relationship's pain can keep you attached to someone even after it's over. Similarly, harboring limiting beliefs about yourself can create energetic cords that hold you back from achieving your full potential. It could be as simple as someone cutting you off on the road while driving, and you hold onto that anger long after you’re home. These attachments block you from releasing these emotions and moving on, taking up all this real estate in your brain.

Think of a time you argued with someone. You just kept replaying that argument over and over in your head. You kept thinking of things you should’ve said or ways you could’ve won the argument. You can’t let it go, and it starts consuming you. You think of this situation over and over while you’re cooking or showering. This is an energetic cord attached to you; it takes your focus, energy, and time. If you’re experiencing this, it’s time to cord-cut.

The longer a cord is attached, the stronger it can become. During reiki sessions, sometimes I can feel the density of these cords, and some don’t appear to me until after I’ve done a few sessions on people. As we slowly peel back layers in each session, more is revealed because they are ready to heal on that energetic layer.

While cord-cutting doesn't erase memories or change your history, it allows you to release the negative energy associated with these attachments. It's like pruning a garden, removing weeds that block the growth of beautiful flowers. By severing these cords, you create space for healing, attract positive energy, and, ultimately, empower yourself to move forward with greater lightness, focus, and freedom.

Also, keep in mind that energetic cords can be attached to an idea, business, or something materialistic in your life. For example, some might energetically attach to something you’ve accomplished or attained in life out of jealousy or desire. So, you may need to cut cords on your business, house, car, etc.

Why Should I Cut These Cords?

But why should you consider practicing spiritual cord-cutting? Here are some of the potential benefits:

Enhanced Emotional Well-being

Releasing cords tied to past pain, traumas, or toxic relationships can reduce anxiety, depression, and emotional overwhelm. You'll find it easier to let go of negativity and cultivate inner peace.

Improved Relationships

Cord-cutting doesn't mean eliminating relationships but rather setting healthy, energetic boundaries. By releasing unhealthy or draining cords, you can strengthen positive connections and attract more fulfilling relationships.

Personal Growth and Empowerment

When you cut cords to limiting beliefs and self-doubt, you open yourself up to new possibilities and greater confidence. You'll find it easier to tap into your true potential and move towards your goals.

Increased Energy and Vitality

Energetic cords can drain your vital energy. Releasing them can revitalize your spirit, leaving you feeling lighter, more vibrant, and ready to embrace new experiences.

Strengthened Intuition and Spiritual Connection

With less energetic clutter, your intuition can become clearer, allowing you to connect more deeply with yourself and the spiritual realm.

What if They Are Good Cords

Not all etheric connections are bad. Some are connections you want to keep, for example, energetic connections to loved ones or your children. If it provides a healthy energy exchange, you can keep this chord connected or reattach it after you’ve done a full cutting and cleanse. It’s up to you.

When to Cut Cords

  • After a reiki session.

  • After a stressful event.

  • If someone makes you feel drained after you meet or talk with them.

  • For your business.

  • After a breakup.

  • If you are involved in any sort of toxic relationship.

  • If you're trying to leave or set healthy boundaries with a toxic and demanding job.

How to Start Cutting Cords

Now, how do you actually practice spiritual cord-cutting? While there are many specific techniques and rituals based on different traditions, the core principles remain similar.
Here are some general steps to guide you:

1. Identify the Cords: Take some quiet time to introspect. Reflect on situations, relationships, or emotions that leave you drained or depleted. Notice recurring thoughts, patterns, or physical sensations that might indicate an energetic cord.

2. Visualization and Intention: Once you've identified a cord, envision it clearly in your mind's eye. See it as a rope, thread, or even a beam of energy connecting you to the source of negativity. Sometimes, you can sense what body party it’s connected to; sometimes, you just feel the general connection. Set a clear intention to release this cord, stating your desire to let go of its influence on your life.

3. Cutting the Cord: Choose a method that resonates with you. You can visualize yourself severing the cord with a sword, scissors, or even your bare hands. Some prefer to call upon spiritual guides or angels for assistance. Breathe deeply and feel the energy released as the cord is cut.

4. Sealing the Energetic Wound: Imagine a white or golden light filling the space where the cord once was, cleansing and sealing your aura.

5. Gratitude and Affirmation: Express gratitude for the release and reaffirm your commitment to self-love and well-being. It’s also a good idea to state something along the lines of:

“I call back my power (or energy). What is mine is returned to me. My body, mind, and spirit are now healed and protected.”

Final Thoughts

It's important to remember that cord-cutting is not always a one-time event, especially if you are a highly sensitive empath. Energetic attachments can reform, so you might need to repeat the process from time to time, especially when dealing with deeply ingrained patterns. Be patient with yourself and trust in your intuition to guide you.
